Welcome to New Covenant Community Church! 51 East Oneida Street, Oswego, NY

Here are some statements about leadership that are meant to be foundational in establishing the purpose of church leadership at NCCC.

The Attitude of an Elder

Mark 10:42-45 “Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Elders & leaders are called by Jesus to be servants, and to exercise their authority to benefit those they lead and to help them grow, to become better. The example of Jesus leadership was strong in this way. Jesus lived to bring people to God, not to benefit Himself. Jesus led out of God’s will, not His own. Though Jesus was God in man’s flesh, He served without recognition.

Elders, as well as all true leaders must have the same attitude of heart Jesus had.

The Purpose of an Elder

Jeremiah 3:15 “Then I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will feed you on knowledge and understanding.”

Local church elders or overseers are called to care for, feed, and protect the flock that they look after. This must happen in a manner in which they are among the sheep. It does not succeed if they are apart from or uninvolved with the congregation in a personal manner.

It’s important that we acknowledge and honor those that Jesus has called to leadership in the local church. It’s also important that the general expectation of the congregation would be one of prayer, support and input for godly, accountable, and approachable leadership who will feed and care for the flock in the spirit of Jesus Christ.
